Comfortable

By Muthoni Maina

The lights dimmed

The glasses clink

“Congratulations on your promotion” she says

The lyrics ‘Lay your head on my pillow say’ from Comfortable by H.E.R sing

He adjusts the pillows on his lap

“Thank you” he says

Her hair gently flows on her cheekbones and lands on the wine glass as she sips

“I mean it” he says

“What do you mean” she says as she adjusts comfortably on the couch

“Thank you for celebrating this milestone with me. I’m glad I have a friend in you, Malia,” he says while staring deep into her eyes in a manner that screams ‘I wanna suck your soul out’

She shrugs her shoulders, smirks as she gets up to clear the table, “No biggie, we aight”.

He stands to offer Malia help as they head towards the kitchen sink

Of cooking shows and kitchen fires

Hands slide up her waist to hug her from behind

The lyrics, ‘I feel so comfortable with you’ by H.E.R keep playing on the new radio she just got.

The breath of wine lingers in the air as they sing out the chorus.

This moment, slow dancing, gazing into each other’s eyes

Her brown eyes lightly reflect the bright light in the kitchen

Her nightgown beautifully sits on her body accentuating her curves

“You’re built like an aphrodite’” he whispers into her ear and faces her with a smirk

“Hawi, stop!” she blushes as she shoves him.

With a tight grip, pulls her closely

Bodies, intertwined

Hands, interlocked

Lips, locked in

‘I feel so comfortable with you’
