Today, I Missed You

By Muthoni Maina

Today, I wore black
“Sundays are sunny days,” so they say
But today
The other side of my bed was cold
The weather was gloomy
But still, I left

Today, I carried flowers
Fresh ones, arranged in a vase
I took them to our spot
Where we first sat
Where we spoke from our hearts

Today, I did not wail
I did not curse
Neither did I create a fuss

Instead,
I sat with a stranger
Made them laugh
Listened to their stories

For a moment, I forgot that I lost
I met someone new
And still,
I miss someone I once knew

I longed for your arms
To be held by you
To hear your voice
To see you

Today, I missed you

But also,
I lived

Today was a bit easy
