1–2 minutes

Pain, a friend?

I sat with my pain
Asked it to lie on the couch
And look at the clock on the wall
As it narrated
Tales of abandonment

I stared at my pain
“Listen. Pleease!”
It whispered, loudly!
“I’m your friend! I just want to talk!”
It got louder as I looked away

Pain? A friend?
You must think me a fool!
Get away from me!
Your deceit is outrageous!

Pain!
It never went away
It grew louder
And louder!
AND LOUDER!!!
lIIIIISTEEEEEN!!!!!!

The pain
Was no longer a whisper
It was trumpets
And vuvuzelas
Sirens!
I could not silence it

In resignation
I listened
Beat up
And tired
I had no choice
But to listen
To my pain

I listened
As my pain
Narrated tales
Of abandonment
My own abandonment
Of the many times
I stood myself up
Betrayed…Me!

I listened
Tears flowing
To narration
After narration
Until I realized
That the pain
Was only a messenger
Sent by me
My own body
Whose undying love
Could not bare
My abandonment
